In its press release of 7th May 2014, the Museum of Fine Arts Berne announced that it has been unexpectedly named as the sole heir of Cornelius Gurlitt. According to the Director of the Museum, Matthias Frehner, “this news struck like a bolt from the blue since at no point in time had there been any relationship between Mr Gurlitt and the Museum”. Although the Museum was pleasantly surprised and expressed its gratitude, it also pointed out that Mr Gurlitt’s magnificent bequest came with far-reaching responsibilities. In addition, the Museum stated that it was likely to face difficult questions in the future of a legal and ethical nature.
