Description

Given that we are soon to be one year on from the record-breaking $69 million Beeple NFT sale, and the subject of NFTs continues to engage the art market, the time seems ripe to explore the legal and regulatory issues which arise and to consider what the future might hold for the NFT. How will laws and regulations be applied to what has been termed the ‘wild west’ of the NFT market to ensure its sustainability and its efficient operation over the long term? And how might the museum sector engage with this new phenomenon?

The event will be introduced and moderated by Emily Gould, IAL’s Assistant Director. Confirmed speakers include:

  • Jon Sharples – IP and Art Lawyer, Associate at Canvas Art Law
  • Rakhi Talwar, Lawyer and Art Compliance Consultant
  • Rachael Muldoon, Barrister, 36 Commercial Chambers
  • Alistair Hudson, Director of the Whitworth, University of Manchester

The panel will cover a range of areas including: an overview of the legal issues arising through the lifecycle of an NFT; an examination of the contractual terms imposed by NFT marketplaces and how these impact NFT transactions;  compliance issues relating to anti-money laundering regulations and the prospects for wider application of securities regulation; the opportunities NFTs present for museums and galleries.
